VINTAGE "TROGS FOR TROLLS" AD

Here's an interesting article about trolls taken from the book "Panati's Parade of Fads, Follies, and Manias":

"In 1963 college professors around the country noticed a strange ritual during exam time: sitting on the desks of understandably anxious students were tiny, pudgy, naked, glassy eyed imps, with shocks of white sheep's wool hair, flared nostrils and jutting ears; gnomes comical in their ugliness. The troll dolls-originally known as Dammit Dolls after their creater, Danish woodcarver Thomas Dam-were said to bring their owners good luck. Indeed, the press had recently reported that daredevil pilot Bette Miller, who had replicated Amelia Earhart's 1935 solo flight of 7,400 miles, had as her "co-pilot" a troll doll. the country's First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, let it be known that she owned a troll doll (go Ladybird!) By the end of the Sixties, the small elves were the second bestselling doll in the country-topped only by their comely antithesis, Barbie."
